These tools are often said to facilitate ‘functional’ training. But most people don’t know that these tools were introduced to facilitate rehabilitation based training, with the intent to rehab ankle injuries (I should mention, this does work in that setting).
Their gradual slide into the commercial gym setting was most likely a result of the success they saw in this rehabilitation setting, and are now suggested to be a guaranteed way to increase balance and stability.
Now, I am by no means writing them off completely! I do believe they can be used effectively to improve upper body stability (scapular stability in particular), and trunk stability.
BUT in my personal opinion, beyond this, the benefits of there use within the general and athletic population are limited..
